He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession … (Titus 2:14 – underline added)
You belong to God!
The Bible tells you this amazing truth in many ways.
He purchased you:
You are not your own, 20 for you were bought at a price. (1 Cor 6:20)
… the church of God which He purchased with His own blood … (Ac 20:28)
45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. (Mt 13:45-46 – ESV)
You are the pearl of great value to God that He bought by giving all He had … Himself … so that you could be His.
He ransomed you:
… Christ Jesus … who gave Himself—a ransom for all (1 Tim 2:5-6)
… the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life—a ransom for many. (Mt 20:28)
Ransom is paid to release a captive. As an unsaved person you were a slave and captive to sin and the death penalty that came with being its possession (Rom 6:23), but God paid the ransom price to buy you back from sin (Rom 6:15-20).
God paid the ransom price to buy you to be His.
He redeemed you to be His:
Redeeming is purchasing back something. God redeemed you back to Him from belonging to sin.
7 We have redemption in Him through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. (Eph 1:7-8)
… You (Jesus) redeemed people for God by Your blood … (Rev 5:9 – parenthesis added)
to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. (Gal 4:5)
He chose you to be His:
3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ … 4 For He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love 5 He predestined us to be adopted through Jesus Christ for Himself, according to His favor and will … (Eph 1:4-5)
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. (1 Pet 2:9)
Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved … (Col 3:12)
If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you. (Jn 15:19)
But we must always thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. (2 Thes 2:13)
To the temporary residents dispersed in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. (1 Pet 1:1-2)
You belong to God. This truth should help you to understand this passage better:
27 “My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish—ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.” (Jn 10:27-30)
God has given Himself to purchase you, ransom you, redeem you, and choose you to belong to Him. He is not going to let you go. That is why the Lord even stressed you are in BOTH His hands AND the Father’s hands, and nobody can snatch you out of either.
You belong to God and He’s never letting you go. Let that truth sink in.
Think about it
In what different ways does Scripture say you became God’s possession?
How does it make you feel to know that God did so many things to make you His?
What does it mean to you that you are God’s possession?
How does being God’s possession make you feel about your spiritual security in Him?
What about God saving you makes you appreciate Him?
