Do you actually do what God’s Word says?

Jesus once asked:

“Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?” (Lk 6:46)

Believing in Christ as Savior is essential for salvation, but being a follower of Christ means living by His example and doing what He said. How are you doing at following His Word and lead?

Be a Doer, Not Just a Hearer of The Word

The Bible isn’t just a book of nice ideas or commands to follow; it’s a guide for living, full of advice, direction, and wisdom. You need to live by it. Believing in Christ as Lord and Savior means you are saved but it doesn’t mean you are a follower of Christ. You must live by Jesus’ example and do what He said to be considered a true follower. As you obey His commands and follow His instruction, you are submitting to the Lordship of Jesus over your life.

22 But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his own face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but one who does good works—this person will be blessed in what he does. (Jms 1:22-25)

Do you apply the Bible to your life?

If not, you can’t be surprised if things go poorly for you when you don’t follow His instructions for living. For example, can a child be surprised when they are hurt by doing something their parent warned them not to do?

Living by the Bible Braces You for the Storms of Life

Jesus made it clear that following His Word prepares you for the storms of life:

24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great!” (Mt 7:24-27)

If you don’t live by God’s Word, your life will come crashing down when the storms come.

You need to follow what God’s Word says and put it into practice in your life.

Think about it

Do you truly value God’s Word?

Do you live the way the Bible says you should live?

If you don’t, why not? Is it pride, laziness, wrong priorities, or fear? Is it because it’s hard, inconvenient, against your nature, or scary? Do you think you know things better than God or do you simply not care about what He said?

God Word teaches and disciplines you:

Will you not accept discipline by listening to My words? (Jer 35:13)

Follow God’s Word brings great rewards:

The law … testimony … precepts … commandments … rules of the Lord … by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. (Ps 19:7-11 – ESV)

So:

46 “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?” (Lk 6:46)
