Do you have fearful reverence and awe of God?

God is a Great King (Mal 1:14), Creator (Gen 1:1), and holy (Rev 4:8). You are made from dust (Gen 2:7) and were sinful from the time of the womb (Ps 51:5-7). He is awesome and you are not.

22 Do you not fear Me? This is the Lord’s declaration. Do you not tremble before Me, the One who set the sand as the boundary of the sea, an enduring barrier that it cannot cross? … (Jer 5:22)

You should have a fearful reverence for God because of who He is, what He’s done, and what He can do.

God is worthy of your reverence.

Scenes of God in the Bible

Slowly read through these scenes of God in the Bible and try to imagine His magnificence:

19 Then Micaiah said, “Therefore, hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and the whole heavenly host was standing by Him at His right hand and at His left hand.” (1 Ki 22:19; 2 Chron 18:18)

16 The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day He called to Moses from the cloud. 17 The appearance of the Lord’s glory to the Israelites was like a consuming fire on the mountaintop. (Ex 24:16-17)

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and His robe filled the temple. (Isa 6:1)

… I was sitting in my house … and there the hand of the Lord God came down on me. I looked, and there was a form that had the appearance of a man. From what seemed to be His waist down was fire, and from His waist up was something that looked bright, like the gleam of amber …I saw the glory of the God of Israel … (Eze 8:1-2, 4)

After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. He was transformed in front of them, and His face shone like the sun. Even His clothes became as white as the light. (Mt 17:1-2)

Immediately I was in the Spirit, and a throne was set there in heaven. One was seated on the throne, and the One seated looked like jasper and carnelian stone. A rainbow that looked like an emerald surrounded the throne … Flashes of lightning and rumblings of thunder came from the throne. (Rev 4:2-5)

God is glorious, mighty, beautiful, and powerful beyond what you could ever imagine. You proper response to Him should be awe and a fearful reverence.

Reactions of People Who Saw God

Look at how people in the Bible reacted when they saw God’s glory:

  • Ezekiel the prophet fell facedown (Ezekiel 1:28).
  • Manoah and his wife fell face down (Judges 13:20).
  • King David fell face down (1 Chronicles 21:16).
  • Even the Apostle John who walked with Jesus and saw Him transfigured fell like a dead man when He saw His glory in Revelation (Rev 1:12-17).

Anybody who saw God in the Bible had one reaction: awe and reverence. They fell face down before Him.

I don’t have any doubt that will by my reaction and yours when we see Him face-to-face.

Give God the awe and fearful reverence He deserves even now while you’re on this planet.

He deserves it.

Think about it

Has irreverence for God has crept into your life?

Are you irreverent to God by using casual nicknames for Him (“JC”, “Man upstairs”, “Big Guy”), or by saying OMG or use His Name as a curse word?

Do you invite irreverence of Him into your home and life through TV, videos, or social media where God’s Name is used in vain or used as a joke?

Do you laugh at jokes that use God in an irreverent way?

Do you always show the appropriate awe and respect for the King of kings?

Closely examine yourself and answer “Do you not fear God?”

Show God the reverence He deserves in every part of your life.

“For I am a great King,” says Yahweh of Hosts, “and My name will be feared among the nations.” (Mal 1:14)

And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. (Rev 19:16)

Let the whole earth tremble before the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. (Ps 33:8-9)

All the angels stood around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures, and they fell facedown before the throne and worshiped God (Rev 7:11)
