Jesus spoke of the Father often – sometimes He made mention of Him but other times He told us something about Him. Today we’re going to do something a little different in our study. Look at the things Jesus said about the Father and jot down what they tell you about the Father:

He’s perfect (Mt 5:48):

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Mt 5:48)

He’s all knowing (Mt 10:29; Mt 6:8; Mt 6:31-32):

Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent. (Mt 10:29)

Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask Him. (Mt 6:8)

31 So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. (Mt 6:31-32. See also Lk 12:30)

He’s your Father and is in Heaven (Mt 23:9):

Do not call anyone on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is in heaven. (Mt 23:9)

He’s powerful and can protect (Mt 26:53):

Or do you think that I cannot call on My Father, and He will provide Me at once with more than 12 legions of angels? (Mt 26:53)

He’s only accessible through Jesus (Jn 14:6):

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (Jn 14:6)

He’s greater than all (Jn 10:29):

My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all.  (Jn 10:29)

He’s glorified when His children bear fruit as believers (Jn 15:8):

My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be My disciples. (Jn 15:8)

He is kind to believers and unbelievers (Mt 5:45):

For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. (Mt 5:45)

He rewards His children for doing good (Mt 6:3-4, 6, 18):

But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Mt 6:3-4)

But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Mt 6:6)

so that you don’t show your fasting to people but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Mt 6:18)

He provides for animals (Mt 6:26):

Look at the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? (Mt 6:26)

He’s working (Jn 5:17):

But Jesus responded to them, “My Father is still working, and I am working also” … (Jn 5:17)

He judges (Jn 8:16):

And if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me judge together. (Jn 8:16)

He’s self-sufficient and immortal (Jn 5:26):

For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son to have life in Himself. (Jn 5:26)

He grants life to whomever He chooses (Jn 5:21):

And just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to anyone He wants to. (Jn 5:21)

He loves Jesus (Jn 5:20):

For the Father loves the Son and shows Him everything He is doing … (Jn 5:20)

He draws His elect to Jesus and reveals Him to them (Jn 6:44, 65; Mt 16:17):

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day. (Jn 6:44)

He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is granted to him by the Father.” (Jn 6:65)

And Jesus responded, “Simon son of Jonah, you are blessed because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven.” (Mt 16:17)

He loves people who love Jesus (Jn 16:27):

For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God. (Jn 16:27)

His will is to raise up believers on the last day for eternal life (Jn 6:40):

For this is the will of My Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (Jn 6:40)

He gives believers a kingdom (Lk 12:32):

Don’t be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom. (Lk 12:32)

Go over the list of things you wrote down.

Did you learn anything new about the Father?

Did anything jump out at you in a new way?

Spend time now thinking about God, His character, and His acts.
