Your mind needs to be under your control and not the other way around. Throughout your life the world, the devil, and your sin nature will try to plant bad and ungodly thoughts in your mind. The best defense against this is a good offense. As a believer in Christ, you should work to fill your mind with good and godly thoughts so there is less room up there for bad and ungodly thoughts. The best was to do that is by thinking about God, His Word, and His works.

Think about God (Col 3:1-2; Heb 12:1-2)

So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth. (Col 3:1-2)

… Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus … (Heb 12:1-2)

Think about God often throughout every day. Keep your mind on Him. By thinking of Him there is less room for bad thoughts and you will be less likely to sin (See Joseph in Gen 39:7-9), bring you peace (Isa 26:3), joy (Ps 34:5), and stability in life so you aren’t shaken (Ps 16:8). Keep your mind on God – think about Him, His character, His glory, or what He’s doing now.

Think About God’s Word (Ps 119:97)

97 How I love Your instruction! It is my meditation all day long. (Ps 119:97. See also Ps 119:23-24, 48)

This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. (Josh 1:8)

Thoughts of God’s Word will keep your mind on good things but also comes with much great benefits. God’s Word completes and fully equips you (2 Tim 3:16-17), builds your faith (Rom 10:17), and following it brings spiritual success and prosperity (Josh 1:7-8; 2 Tim 3:17). Why wouldn’t you want to think about it? Think about God’s Word throughout every day.

Think About God’s Works (1 Sam 12:24)

24 Above all, fear the Lord and worship Him faithfully with all your heart; consider the great things He has done for you. (1 Sam 12:24)

I remember the days of old; I meditate on all You have done; I reflect on the work of Your hands. (Ps 143:5)

Hear this, O Job; stop and consider the wondrous works of God. (Job 37:14 – ESV)

Think about God’s works. It will stabilize you when you feel overwhelmed by life (Ps 143:3-5) and prepare you for tough times ahead (Hab 3:2).

Make it a Lifestyle

Build the habit of thinking about God, His Word, and His works all day whether you are at work, doing chores, driving, exercising, etc. You can do it. The Prophet Daniel from the Old Testament had a high-level government job in a pagan government but he kept his eyes on God and prayed three times a day.

Think about it

Do you believe thinking about God, His Word, and His works during the day is a good thing for you?

Do you notice a difference in yourself (outlook, behavior) when you are more focused on God and spiritual things?

Name some benefits of having God in your thoughts always (See Isa 26:3; Ps 34:5; Gen 39:7-9; Mt 14:22-31 above).

What are some benefits of reading and thinking about God’s Word (See 2 Time 3:16-17; Isa 55:10-11; Rom 10:17; Josh 1:7-8)?

How does thinking about God’s works help you?

Will you try to think about God, His Word, or His works more often?
